Halo 3’s Theater: Where're the Videos?

This week at GDC, Ninja Gaiden 2 was announced to include a Saved Film feature that is similar to Halo 3. Even though I’m interested in the game, I really like this feature and think this is where Halo 3 really innovated. I’m sure we all expected a flood of cool and exciting videos from the game. I even posted a few videos myself thinking that I had done something cool and that others might enjoy it. Turns out, it wasn’t that exciting to other people.
Assassin’s Creed Bug Helps Earn Achievement

I have finally gotten around to playing through Assassin’s Creed and I love every moment of it. While many of the mission types are repeated, they never feel stale or repetitive. The AI may follow fairly static paths but the crowd seems so dynamic that a mission is never the same when retrying it. Additionally, assassinating someone with the hidden blade never gets tiring or old, it is always satisfying!

Fun Friday: Playing Catch Up Edition

Yes, Please
GameSetWatch - Opinion: Our Inevitable Episodic FutureNo More Heroes is structured around a series very dramatic assassination missions. Without giving anything away, there are ten or so of these, and each mission plays like its own little episode -- you get the background, you prepare, and then the fights are both cinematic and climactic. There's a satisfying conclusion when you win, and it feels just like you've watched an installment of your favorite serial television show.
The game's comic tone, stylistic elements and real "character's characters" help with this, too. There are plenty of things to mess around with outside of the mission structure, so there's more to do if you have more time -- but everything generally can be digested in one tidy bite if you haven't. And the depth of experience doesn't suffer, either.
How cool would it have been if each of No More Heroes' missions was released separately, once per week, digitally? And you and all your friends who were interested in the game could get excited together looking forward to the next crazy part-time job, the next larger-than-life boss character, and then all tune in together for the latest? Then the next day, you hit the official site to see a sneak peek of next week's fight and blabber about it -- reflect, speculate, enthuse, complain -- on the forums? Would be fun, eh?
One More Reason to Not Shop at Wal-Mart

In an effort to "protect the children" from the ever risque box art, Wal-mart is going to start placing M Rated games in 3/4 paper sleeves. In other news: R rated DVDs will still be displayed next to the "Family" section.
You've Been Reduced to the Game with Sex Mini-Games

The first God of War was pure gaming delight. It took some mythological origins and forged a compelling narrative around a new character who can be placed in the pantheon of greek myth. It told this story through engaging game play and artistic flair while single-handedly normalizing the quick-time-event. Now we have further proof, after God of War 2 felt like more of the same, that the developers have run out of ideas, as the first footage of the game since the demo was released is what has become a series staple: the "sex mini-game." I wonder why Fox hasn't jumped all over this yet?
Yes, the first time I encountered the menage-a-trois in the original, I was mildly amused by the offscreen debauchery. It felt forced into the second game, more of an obligation to the first game, but now that it's confirmed for the PSP version, the series has hit a low point. If this game has nothing new to add to the series, and since it's missing a second analog stick, I'll be skipping this one and looking forward to the PS3 version and the end of the story. In the mean time, I guess this means we still not maturing in terms of sex and intimacy in our games, are we?

Dead Space Devs: Pausing is Lame

EA's Dead Space is trying to shake things up. The developers revealed in an interview with CVG that they might omit a pause feature from their upcoming horror game in space. In an effort to keep the game's suspense level high, the developers don't want the player to be able to pause the action to take a breather. Menu-wise, everything is displayed in-game; if you want to have a browse through your inventory to boost your health, you'll have to do it through a hologram projected in front of your face.
This way, if the hordes of screaming monsters get too much for you, the only way you're going to be able to calm down is by finding a quiet room. If you need to boost your health during a fight you'd better do it quick. This system keeps you in the game all the time and looks bloody cool.
On one hand, I'm all for immersion features like real time maps and inventory that occur in game. I'll also welcome a HUD-less screen if they deliver on this intuitive way to access this info in real time. But on the other hand, total elimination of a pause feature is just silly. Life is still happening outside of the game world, nature will call. Don't put the map and inventory screen in the pause menu, but pressing START should still stop the game and display the word "PAUSE" on screen.
Ender's Game Coming to Consoles

This is fairly old news, but I was very exited the last time this info surfaced. Now it's official, but I'm cautiously optimistic. The developer is Chair Entertainment, who created Undertow. The game was a technical achievement but, even after it became free, I still found it to be nearly unplayable. Maybe I just didn't "get it," but despite all of my AI companions, I always felt like I was fighting hordes of enemies on my own which lead to overwhelming frustration.
Ender's Game the game will focus on the Battle Room, which is both exciting and perplexing. While it is easy to imagine a game based on the rules provided for the Battle Room, Ender's success was directly related on how he was able to bend these rules in order to combat seemingly insurmountable odds. If every match begins with someone rushing for the enemy's gate before the other team knows what is going on, there will be some very disappointed fans and gamers. I guess we'll just have to wait for more information regarding the game play in this upcoming Ender adventure. In the mean time, I'll be recruiting for Dragon Army!
